Cellester Laate was the brother of Zuni fetish carver Danette Laate and the cousin to Sly Walela, Randy and Gale Lucio, Jared Amesoli, and Yancy Robert Halusewa. He was exceptional in his work mostly with Mother-of-Pearl as exemplified by this great Mother-of-Pearl swan fetish. The feathers, head, and neck are carved in great detail. The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the carving is initialed C.L. in the typical fashion of Celester Laate.
