Well crafted Sarah Leekya eagle fetish Hand Carved from a form of white alabaster. with jet inlaid eyes. Sarah was born in 1930 and passed away in 2017, she was the daughter of Leekya Deyuse, considered by many to be the Rembrandt of Zuni fetish carving, and the sister of Alice Homer and Francis Leekya, both great carvers in their own right. Sarah learned her craft from working with and helping her father with his fetishes. This fetish was likely carved 1985-1995 as the bird is really well done as Sarah’s vision started failing in her seventies, and later carvings will reflect that. The bird has jet inlaid eyes, and is unsigned which is typical of Sarah's work. For artists in her generation is was rather taboo or at the very least bad manners, to call attention to oneself. The picture below is Sarah buying turquoise from my friend Greg Hofmann at Turquoise Village.
