Outstanding Zuni medicine bear fetish Hand Carved from a lovely specimen of marble with turquoise inlaid heart line and eyes. Stewart's medicine bears are the most famous and highly sought-after fetishes created at Zuni. Stewart is the son of Ellen and Dixie Quandelacy and was born in 1949. He started carving in grade school, as did most of his brothers and sisters (Andres, Avery, Barlow, Sandra, Dickie, Wilmer, Faye, Georgia, and Albenita Yunie). After Naval service in Vietnam, Stewart began carving regularly, starting with stringing fetishes and then progressing to standing fetishes. In the 1970s, he originated and subsequently became famous for the "medicine bear," this highly stylized bear fetish with its zigzag inlaid heartline. Stewart is a rancher as well as a famous artist and is a very private man most comfortable staying out of the public eye and letting his wife Priscilla Lasiloo (a good carver in her own right) handle the business end of his carving.
