Very special little kiwi Hand Carved from a tagua nut by legendary Zuni artist Yancy Robert Halusewa. Vegetable ivory or tagua nut is a product made from the very hard white endosperm of the seeds of certain palm trees. The tagua nuts are harvested as part of a program to protect endangered South American rain forests by promoting the use of renewable resources. In addition it keeps the real ivory where it belongs on living animals. Sadly Yancy Halusewa passed away in 2013. Aside from the perfect style, flow, proportion and finish of his carvings the word I would use most often to describe his work is whimsical. Yancy was always one of my favorite carvers and his work has a big place in my personal collection.
