This remarkable bear fetish was hand-carved from locally sourced Ojo rock by the legendary carver Sepo Ponchuella (1881-1978), one of the most respected and most unlikely masters of his generation. Although Ponchuella spent most of his early life as a jeweler, he was forced to set aside the meticulous work he loved when his eyesight weakened.. It wasn't until his 80s that he turned to carving, beginning a late life artistic chapter that would continue almost until his passing.
Like many traditional artisans of his era, Ponchoella relied entirely on non-electric tools. His process included shaping his fetishes with hand powered grinding wheels , pumped drills and files. He smoothed each piece with an emery cloth and performed the final polish by buffing it on his knee. Every surface, line, and contour was achieved through touch, patience and deeply honed skill rather than machinery.
Ojo rock, found locally and cherished by Poncjoella, was his preferred medium, and the warm earthy texture of this bear reflects both the material's natural beauty and the artist's intimate familiarity with it. With its grounded presence and classic form, this carving stands not only as a fine fetish but as a tangible piece of cultural artistic history, connecting the collector directly to one of the great traditional craftsmen of the 20th century. 2 3/8" wide- 1 1/2" tall- 5/8" thick. 100% money back satisfaction guarantee.
